we are…a lot of things
Cordelia & Co. Design is the newest branch of a decades-deep creative venture. From event planning, floral design, staging and styling, to brick and mortar shops and workshops that began in the Piedmont region of Virginia and neighboring areas, the Cordelia & Co. network of nimble creatives has done it all. We’ve developed this space to share our knowledge and experience with next gen doers and makers.
We are professionals in floral and event design. We are also interior and exterior design consultants who have been enlisted by award winning architects and realtors. Our experience includes model homes and condominiums, residential and commercial design, as well as retail display and support.
We are also teachers. Led by backgrounds in color theory, fine art, and composition, we have acted as creative consultants for educational programs, including artist in residence for school systems. We have taught classes in creativity, fine art, careers in design, floral composition, wreath making, and sculpture.
The pandemic forced us all to shift priorities and focus in on what matters most. For us, that’s sustainability and responsibility. After quarantining with our stuff, most of us spent some time reevaluating our relationships with our stuff. More than ever, we are learning that you don’t always need to buy more stuff. We can do more with less. Our things can have multiple lives, endless purposes. Our experience and creative practice taught us how to utilize resources for more than one goal. We hope to teach others how to have those eyes, too — especially in the world of Celebration.
The important life events and rituals we hold dear mean more now than ever before. And whether it’s from a lack of funds or availability, or a desire to remain close to home, or purchase and consume less, an opportunity lies before us all to do the most with what we already have. It may take some re-imagining, but there’s a more sustainable, personal, local way to do everything you want to do. We hope to help you find it.
We believe that the best design is inclusive design
Being inclusive requires excluding people who think that their community is the only one that deserves rights. So if you're a fascist, a racist, a misogynist, homophobe, transphobe, or just generally a jerk to other people, stop reading. This site is not for you. All other humans are welcome. We are utterly delighted and grateful to share this space with you.
We believe that inclusive design strives to bridge the needs and accessibilities of many different communities. Lots of design work, from weddings to flowers, tend to assume a certain level of wealth and privilege. But we believe that everyone deserves to unlock the beauty and creativity in their world, so we aim to include zero-budget options on this site.
We believe that inclusive design centers justice and equity for the most marginalized among us. So many mainstream designs out there have been plagiarized from Black, indigenous, and other marginalized peoples with no credit or compensation. We produce original content, and where we don't, we give credit where credit is due.
Most importantly, we believe that inclusive design is always seeking to improve itself. Founded by white women, Cordelia and Co Design recognizes that learning is a lifelong process and that there are always ways to be more inclusive, especially from the privileged vantage point we occupy. We listen, we read, we learn, we grow, and we change with humility and respect. If you have feedback on ways we can improve, we want to hear from you.
